Veneers

What is a veneer?

Veneers are used to modify the colour and shape of your teeth, and to restore and enhance your natural youthful smile. Typically made of a thin layer or inlay of porcelain, a veneer fits over the front surface of your tooth. On occasion a natural composite material may be used instead.

Why would I need a veneer?

Where staining or discolouration has occurred, the cosmetic dentistry treatment of a veneer can improve the colour, shape and position of your teeth. A precise colour matched veneer can lighten your teeth or your chipped tooth can be made to look intact again, as the porcelain veneer covers the whole of the front of the tooth. Also used to close small gaps, particularly when orthodontics (braces) is unsuitable, a veneer can be fitted to align the teeth.

What is the advantage of veneers?

Veneers will give your teeth a natural and healthy look.

How are my teeth prepared for veneers?

Firstly a tiny amount of shiny surface enamel will be removed to help the permanent bonding process. The amount removed will match the thickness of the veneer to be fitted, ensuring the tooth remains the same size. Next your dentist will take an ‘impression’ (mould). A dental technician will make your veneer, colour matched to your surrounding teeth to give a completely natural look.

How long is the process?

From two visits: firstly to prepare and match the shade of your tooth and secondly to fit it.

How long will my veneer last?

Between 5 and 10 years, however they can be chipped or broken, just like your own teeth can. Repairs can be made to small chips or a new veneer can be fitted.
