Tooth Whitening

Like to Brighten your Smile and Boost your Confidence?

Tooth staining often results from our lifestyle and the ageing process. Drinking coffee, red wine and smoking can all contribute to your teeth becoming yellow and stained.

Tooth whitening is the first step to help you achieve brighter, whiter teeth. Using the safe, effective and quick acting Zoom tooth whitening technology, performed by your dentist at Highworth Dental Care in Wiltshire, you’ll be showing off your beautiful smile in no time!

So what is tooth whitening?

A highly effective cosmetic dentistry method to lighten the natural colour of your teeth, tooth whitening does not remove any of your tooth surfaces.

Do I need a check-up first?

Yes. To make sure your teeth and gums are healthy and that tooth whitening is a suitable option. In addition your fillings or crowns will remain the same colour and may need replacing to match the new lighter colour of your teeth. As only your teeth will whiten. Prior to cosmetic or restorative dentistry treatments such as veneers and crowns, your dentist may discuss tooth whitening options to enhance your new smile.

What is involved?

Firstly a gel made of rubber will be put on your gums to protect the soft tissue. Then your dentist will apply the whitening product to your teeth, using a specially made tray which fits into your mouth like a gum-shield.

The process works like this. The active ingredients hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide start to break down as oxygen gets into the enamel, making the tooth colour lighter.

How long does tooth whitening take?

In-chair: Up to one hour using a light to activate the gel placed on your teeth by your dentist.

Home-kit: Within two weeks. On your first visit your dentist will take impressions and make you a mouth guard. Your dentist in Swindon starts the treatment for you then to continue at home. This involves regular application of the whitening product over two weeks for four hours at a time.

How long will the whitening last?

Research says tooth whitening can last up to two years dependent upon the individual. Staining may reoccur if you smoke, or if you drink red wine and coffee.

Are there any side-effects?

Some sensitivity to cold may occur during or after the treatment, you may experience discomfort in your gums, a sore throat or white patches on the gum line. These temporary symptoms should disappear within a few days of completion of your treatment. If side effects persist please visit your dentist.

Do tooth whitening toothpastes actually whiten teeth?

With several whitening toothpastes available they can be effective at removing staining. Tooth whitening toothpaste may prolong your professional tooth whitening treatment.
